Text of the book “Wood Carving. Techniques, methods, products"

Wooden fences are a classic type of fencing for a suburban area. There came a period when they lost popularity, giving way to metal fences, which are distinguished by greater strength and durability. However, times have changed, and with them the fashion for wooden fences has returned. Now they fulfill their original functions (separation and protection of private territory) and decorate the site. If you intend to install a carved wooden fence with your own hands, you need to find templates. There are many of them, so you need to determine the option for each specific situation.

DIY gazebo fencing

When drawing up a gazebo project, you need to carefully consider, including its design.
Most often, these small structures are decorated with beautiful wooden grilles. Today, if you wish, you can purchase or order a ready-made version of this decor. However, unfortunately, it is quite expensive. Do-it-yourself locks for gates made of corrugated sheets? Therefore, perhaps it will be more interesting for someone to make it themselves.

Read about what wooden grilles for gazebos can be and what the technology for assembling them is in this article.

Proper preparation of instruments

If you decide to learn wood carving for beginners on your own, then you need to purchase a minimum set of tools. Such a collection usually includes:

1.A variety of knives to bring your ideas to life.

2. Special jigsaws or chisels necessary to complete the job.

3. An electric drill will come in handy.

5. Special bars that greatly facilitate the work process.

A minimal set of tools will allow you to start mastering a new technology for performing work. Gradually, if you want to engage in serious manufacturing of large-sized items, a milling machine and drill will become a useful acquisition.

Such machines will allow you to engage in wood carving at a professional level. It is also necessary to stock up on spoon cutters that allow you to make objects of a certain shape.

When purchasing wood carving tools for beginners, look for quality. You need items that are designed to last.

Design features

So, let's figure out how to make a wooden lattice for a gazebo with your own hands. Structurally, it consists of the following elements:

  • Two wooden frames giving the structure rigidity.
  • Crossing slats inserted between them.

The main elements of a wooden lattice are slats and a frame made of bars

It’s simply amazing what beauty people can make from a piece of wood. Really beautiful. And some of them are not very complicated.

Maybe someone will be inspired by these photographs of old wooden fences, they can be repeated...

How to make frames?

Do-it-yourself sheathing frames for gazebos are most often made from bars with a cross-section of 20x45 mm. The easiest way to connect them is “in a tenon”.

When assembling the frame with your own hands, the easiest way is to use the “through tenon” method (first picture). This fastening is done like this:

  • Wooden blocks are marked in thickness into three equal parts.
  • In two, a tenon is chosen, in two, a groove.

At the ends of the bars, according to the markings, you need to select grooves and tenons

  • The grooves are connected to the ridges using glue.
  • Additionally, the tongue-and-groove lock is secured with two nails. Their caps can be bitten off with wire cutters or sunk into wood, followed by sealing the resulting nests with putty.
  • It is advisable to also screw a self-tapping screw into each connection.

Important: The second frame is made simultaneously with the first, using its elements as a template. This is necessary so that these two structures are absolutely identical in size.

Choice of material quality

You need to select wood in accordance with the pattern you want to get. Experienced craftsmen advise beginners to master wood carving on birch.

This material is characterized by extraordinary softness, therefore it makes it easy to create an ornament. The advantages of birch are:

  • Possibility of cutting in various directions.
  • Excellent pliability.
  • This material is easy to drill.
  • There is a possibility of simple cutting.

Birch is perfect for learning wood carving

You will be able to perform openwork type compositions. However, it should be remembered that birch can change color. Over the years, the material darkens.

If you want to get an ornament with a large number of slots, then coniferous wood is suitable. An excellent solution would be pine, spruce or cedar. These varieties are also great for starting to master fashion technology.

If you are just starting out, the most basic tools are knives, an awl and a jigsaw. Gradually you will be able to expand your set, which will allow you to perform compositions of any type.

Manufacturing of gratings

The production of wooden gratings for gazebos continues by stuffing the mesh itself. It is assembled from slats of small thickness and width. They need to be attached to each of the two frames diagonally (at an angle of 45 degrees).

The distance between the slats is usually about 5cm.

Stuffing slats and connecting frames into a single structure

At the next stage, both frames with slats should be coated with oil-based varnish. Apply it in at least two layers with a preliminary primer. Next, the frames are simply placed on top of each other so that the slats intersect. The result is a lattice with diamond-shaped cells.

The frames are fastened with four self-tapping screws at the corners. After the decorative lattice for the gazebo is completely ready, it is varnished again.

Usually the sheathing of gazebos is varnished

What could the drawing look like?

Above we looked at the technology for manufacturing the simplest grill for gazebos. However, there are other options for this decor. Diamonds can be, for example, double.

Sometimes slats are placed in the middle of frames more often than at the edges (or vice versa). This also allows you to make the grille design original.

Double wooden mesh can look quite unusual

Often lattices are combined with carved and figured wooden elements. However, this should be done carefully. Often such combinations look unnecessarily pretentious.

Gaining initial experience

If you are just starting to master wood carving technology, then it makes sense to prepare a minimum set of tools. For this stage, it is recommended to choose soft grade wood.

Linden or birch will provide excellent opportunities. You also need wood carving for beginner sketching. Choose a simple composition that allows you to hone the necessary movements.

Simple sketches for wood carving

An excellent solution would be to purchase a special set consisting of a sketch, a tool and a wooden blank. In the set you will also find instructions that will allow you to start mastering an interesting process.

This technology is fun, so interest arises. Each product becomes more and more accurate. Gradually you will be able to move on to more complex projects.

What shape could it be?

The finished gratings are attached to the supporting pillars of the gazebo frame, and therefore usually have a rectangular or square shape. However, even in this case, you can show a little imagination. For example, make the top of the parapet grille not straight, but curved or broken.

Slatted cornices are often made in the form of an arch.

  • Volumetric method.

Three-dimensional wood carving

You can choose the technique that matches the type of item being made. It should be remembered that any image can have a relief shape. Convex designs look especially stylish.

If you need to decorate a facade or doors, then choose a volumetric type of wood carving for beginners. However, such work should be started when you have sufficient experience working with wooden blanks.

If you are interested in smaller objects, then various ornaments, contour and geometric sketches will provide excellent solutions. Even beginners can handle this kind of work perfectly.
